Thank You Day was an internal marketing initiative designed to celebrate appreciation and recognition across the organisation.
The project combined UX design and web application development to create a digital platform where employees could exchange personalised appreciation cards inspired by different personality traits and characteristics.
The objective was to encourage positive interactions between colleagues while transforming a simple “thank you” into a more engaging and memorable experience.
The Challenge
Recognition often happens informally and can easily be overlooked in busy work environments.
The challenge was to design an experience that would encourage employees to actively recognise one another, while making participation simple, enjoyable and meaningful.
The platform needed to balance emotional engagement with ease of use, ensuring that sending a message of appreciation felt effortless rather than another corporate task.
Research & Insight
Initial discussions with stakeholders highlighted an important observation: employees enjoy recognition initiatives, but participation often decreases when the process requires too much effort or feels impersonal.
The project therefore focused on reducing friction while increasing emotional value.
A key insight emerged during the discovery phase:
People are more likely to engage when recognition feels personal, playful and authentic.
This led to the concept of personality-based appreciation cards, allowing employees to associate colleagues with positive traits and behaviours before adding a personalised message.
Problem Statement
How might we encourage employees to recognise and appreciate their colleagues through a simple, engaging and meaningful digital experience?
UX Approach
The experience was designed around a lightweight interaction model.
Rather than asking users to write long messages from scratch, the journey starts by selecting a personality card that best represents a colleague.
This simple action provides context, reduces decision-making effort and creates an emotional starting point for the interaction.
The flow was intentionally designed to be completed within a few moments:
- Select a colleague
- Choose a personality card
- Add a personal message
- Send appreciation
By keeping the process simple, the experience encouraged participation while maintaining a meaningful level of personalisation.
Key Design Decisions
Gamification Through Personality Cards
The card-based system introduced an element of discovery and playfulness, making the experience feel more engaging than a traditional messaging form.
Low-Friction Participation
The interaction flow was streamlined to minimise effort and encourage spontaneous participation.
Emotional Design
Visual language, messaging and interactions were designed to reinforce positivity, gratitude and connection between employees.
Recognition Visibility
The experience was structured to celebrate individuals while strengthening a broader culture of appreciation across the organisation.
Visual Design
The interface adopted a friendly and approachable visual language centred around the personality cards.
Colours, illustrations and card interactions were used to create a light-hearted experience while maintaining consistency with the organisation’s internal branding.
The goal was to make the platform feel welcoming, positive and enjoyable to use.
Development
The project was designed and developed as a custom web application, combining user experience, front-end development and internal engagement objectives within a single platform.
The application supported personalised card selection, message creation and digital delivery, allowing employees to participate from any device through a simple and responsive experience.
Special attention was given to usability, responsiveness and reducing interaction friction, ensuring the experience remained accessible to all employees regardless of technical proficiency.
Outcome
The result was a digital experience that transformed a simple appreciation initiative into an engaging employee recognition programme.
By combining personality-driven interactions, personalised messages and a lightweight user journey, the platform encouraged meaningful peer-to-peer recognition while helping reinforce a positive and collaborative company culture.
The project demonstrates how UX design can be used not only to solve functional problems, but also to strengthen human connections and employee engagement within organisations.
